Double Dose

I decided to knock out one fear while preparing to overcome another. I have digital piles of pieces I write but am too scared to let anyone see, and how can I ever become a writer for a successful primetime comedy if I don't spread my wings and fly?!?!

I wrote this excerpt after a painful and stressful day health-wise, and even if you want to give your eyes a bath in Listerine after reading it, I'll still be proud for having the lady balls to put it on the Internet for all to see.

...
It was one of the warmest days of the year so far, a day I could have worn sandals walking if I’d wanted to scrape the shit out of my toes. It was also the day I had my first arrhythmia in two years.

Two years can seem like a short period of time when it’s time spent with a lover or in Europe. Two years can seem too short, but two years can also seem John C. Holmes long. Two years can seem like a safe distance between you and something in your past you never want to see again, like a psycho ex or in my case, abnormal heart rhythms.

On the day in question, I wasn’t doing anything particularly taxing because that doesn’t jive with my consistent role as a woman too paranoid of her own body. I was only walking a .4 mile trail, not even half the distance of what most people exceed in a day. I was actually in the homestretch, going downhill, patting myself on the back, congratulating myself for not sitting inside again, for abandoning my Netflix! For not stuffing my face uncontrollably with cheese, when suddenly, I was struck by what must have been invisible lightening.

In an instant, I was bathed in fear before making the gloomy realization of what was actually causing the dread: an unrelenting irregularly fast pulse. I’m always late to the party, even the ones in my own body.

But once I got there, oh, how I tried to crash it. I stopped moving. I bent over. I coughed my deepest cough. I massaged my neck, my chest. I kept moving. I continued the strange Macarena, but none of it worked to quell the beast. My heart beat on as if it were running a marathon I never gave it permission to enter. There seemed a valve broken in my neck, something that was supposed to close and halt the speeding pattering in my chest but never did.

It was only 30 seconds, but when the most vital organ in your body is uncontrollably spasming and doing so at a speed that is unnatural even during exercise, 30 seconds is a goddamn lifetime. 30 seconds is not normal. 30 seconds of heart malfunction could mean death if it’s bad enough, and constant fear of the next one if you live.

I was alone and didn’t want to end up a case of dead-for-days-before-found. You know, located only by my god-awful smell and found rotting and half eaten by bloodthirsty squirrels?

I wasn’t on a magical island in the middle of nowhere, but it would be a while before someone found me if I collapsed. I didn’t have time to waste if I wanted anyone, be it a meth dealer or the pope, to know where I was.
...

There ya have it. A portion of a portion of something I'm writing. Drink it in, smell its musk, rub its soft fur against your face.

P.S. Can you guess what fear I'm preparing to overcome? It's not as obvious as you think, especially since I didn't include all of the story. You get chocolate* if you guess right!

*This is not a joke.

The Next Step

Thanks for all the love and support, everyone! The CT scan results came back fine. I didn't dance around right away because I was half asleep, but I did a little jig in my kitchen while I was making food. It was very Elaine Benes.

My friend Christy & I came back to Boone and hung out with some friends before I finally made it back to my apartment for the first time in over a week. I had some quality time with the roomie that involved lots of philosophical questions, like "Why is the new Katy Perry video so idiotically boring?" You know, the foundation of our lives and shit like that.

Meanwhile, I have to keep the promise I made to myself and to you guys. I said I would dedicate myself to accomplishing my gonnas if I were healthy, and I'm not one to break my word or give up on my dreams. Looks like I'm gonna have to run around with some motivational anthem like "Eye of the Tiger" on repeat until I get everything done.

Today I'm gonna: run a million errands and clean the apartment like I've never cleaned it before in two weeks.

Silently Waiting, Worrying, Wondering

As is standard with anything to do with the written word, there is an ebb and flow to it all. It's strong then weak, ruthless then soft, riveting then slow.

I know this blog started out with a bang of sardonic comedy and might have made you laugh. It might have given you hope or inspired you, because it seemed like I was really doing big things, or at least overhyping small shit I was proud to have done that day.

But then I fell. Not literally (but almost) because of health issues. I didn't let it stop this blog, but I will be the first to admit that there is a certain essence of myself that seems to be lacking from its content lately. I try to remedy it, but constant exhaustion combined with sometimes debilitating physical problems don't exactly make the mind clear. It's not a conducive environment for wit, and I know that the cracks of my real life have started to show in my written one. Consider these past few weeks the ebb to my prior flow. That means the flow should be returning any minute with coffee, ready get back to work.

I spent yesterday figuring out what my next move was going to be and generally lounging with people who are some of the few on the planet willing to listen to my constant obsession with, well, everything. I talked to my future roommate and my current roommate. I pondered what life will be like a week, month, and year from now. I loosely planned a trip to the big city I soon hope to call my home. I read David Sedaris for the laughs, and found myself reading a story about his elfin job at Macy's his first weeks in New York City. (It was oddly comforting.) All of these things, I would label as gonnas accomplished.

But what I accomplished most yesterday was a nagging feeling at the back of my mind concerning the results of my CT scan. I've convinced myself that it will be completely fine, while at the same time having apocalyptic visions as to what is going on inside of my body. Worse than being legitimately sick would be the fact that all of the gonnas I have planned for myself, big and small, would suddenly have to take a back seat. In an essence, I would have to give up, even if only for a moment. Sure, my gonnas could easily change with me, but my heart would still be with the gonnas I'd committed myself to before I was sick.

So here it is. Today I'm gonna find out if I'm fine or if I'm sick or anywhere on the spectrum between. If I am healthy, I'm gonna celebrate with a dance. I'm going to dedicate myself to making all of my gonnas come true.

If I'm sick, I'm gonna cry, dust my shoulders off, and find gonnas that will make me better.

Regardless, I'm gonna need my readers to stay beside me and keep reading, because really, where would I be - healthy or sick - without anyone by my side?

Swollen Tongues and Benedryl Naps

It was a wild ride. And no, I'm not talking about an amusement park folly, I'm talking about the glory of a CT scan.

Not only did I have to prep my innards by drinking two massive barium shakes that tasted like chalky, rancid berry Kool-Aid, but I wasn't allowed to eat for hours upon hours. I almost pulled a Liz Lemon, as my desire to flip over every table I encountered grew as my hunger did.

(Photo via: lizlemongifs.tumblr.com)

I spent the morning fighting my hunger and the urge to vomit everywhere while copy editing audio pages at USAirways magazine. I didn't plan on that, but I think that's a pretty awesome and productive gonna to add to yesterday's list.

I drove over a few buildings to get the epic CT scan after that. Aside from the fact that the machine looked like a giant formidable donut, the scan went well. That is, until they injected some kind of strange dye into my body via IV. When I got off of the platform to leave, my tongue was numb and swollen. Soon it spread to my throat, and the doctor came to check on me before the nurse finally threw me a Benedryl. I wish that it was hilarious (see Hitch), but I really just sat in a chair and had rolling panic attacks until my medicine kicked in.

The point is, allergic reaction and all, my gonna for the day was done. Luckily, I didn't plan anything else because I came home and succumbed to the Benedryl coma tugging at the back of my eyes. I imagine I probably drooled a bit and maybe even snored. It was some pretty intense shit.

Today I'm gonna: go to a babyshower and submit some resumés. Not an astounding plan, but a good one after a rough Friday.

My First Missed Post

If I failed at all other things, the one thing I didn't want to fail at was this blog itself. Yesterday, I missed my first post. I throw my hands up on this one.

(photo cred: my girl MaryE)

Can't change it and no one's gonna cry about it, so what's the point in feeling bad about it? We'll all live. Well, maybe.

My health problems came back two-fold with no forgiveness. I literally had to sleep on the floor on my yoga mat to keep my abdomen flat enough. I probably looked like a squatter in a heroin den, which is why I'm completely unsurprised that my roommate's face was a mixture of horror/laughter when she opened my door to find I was on the floor.

I stayed there all day because I couldn't move without feeling like I was being crushed by a ton of bricks, so I finally came home to double check things with my doctor. It was only a day earlier than I planned to make the trip anyway, so in a way, I'm rockin' that gonna.

Regardless of my completely horizontal setback, I still feel like I accomplished something. Aside from the fact that I completely finished all my Monday gonnas, I also managed to quell any fears or anxiety about my health issues on Tuesday, which is a fantastic breakthrough for the rampant hypochondriac I happen to be.

Today I'm gonna: exercise in moderation, do whatever the birthday girl wants (MY MOM), and try to bring some overall order back in my life.

I'm also gonna thank every single one of you for getting my little blog to over 1,000 views in 2 weeks!

We'll be back to your regular broadcasting of daily blogs and drollery tomorrow, even if it has to be through pain-clenched teeth.

A Not-So-Plateau Plateau

I have yet to go to sleep, but I am finally, finally feeling the clutches of slumber wrap themselves around my body.

I spent Wednesday resting for all of the upcoming doctors appointments I have and recovering from the intense week of health disasters. I did keep my gonna of resumé-ing and found a gaggle more positions to apply to tomorrow.

I didn't get to see my dad yesterday, but we made plans to move that gonna to today, so I wouldn't say the 23rd was a total failure in terms of this project.

More than anything, it was a day of having daydream upon daydream about what is hopefully coming up in the future for me. It's been a day spent rearranging finances, making a reasonable plan, and imagining sparkling city lights. I'm vague for a reason, but hopefully won't have to be for much longer.

Today I'm gonna: go to my first doctor appointment, eat lunch/talk with Dad, and go to another appointment. I'm gonna spend a few hours after that applying for this new round of jobs I found.

I solemnly swear that I will have some kind of visual stimulant in my entry tomorrow. I know that text only entries ain't everyone's thang. Neither is southern twang, but you can just get over that.

There's No Picture For Imperfect

Yesterday was bittersweet. I woke up tired, but less sore, less scared, and my heart felt at ease. I also basically "walked" into a wonderful offer to start... well, the rest of my life if I'm being honest.

But then I found that what I thought were spots of strength in my plan were actually points of weakness, and I spent a great few hours crying. It's not out of my system, but I got out of the floor and pulled myself up by my (stylish) bootstraps.

Now that my health is out of the red and I've gotten my self-pity out of my system, all there is room for is fighting for what I want, for growth, for determination, for positivity.

I might have my days, but I am not a weak person. I have always fought for what I wanted, especially if I think those around me can benefit from it. In this situation, I see 98% positive results for all of those involved. The other 2% will fix itself or maybe it won't, but I'm going to be selfish.

Yesterday, I managed to accomplish all three gonnas, despite the emotional roller coaster or whatever other kind of vomit-inducing theme park ride you can think of.

Today, I'm gonna: APPLY TO MORE JOBS! A lot more jobs. I'm also gonna go see my dad.

The bigger gonnas are just around the corner. Stick with me while I get the smaller ones underway. I'll bake you a cookie or a "Shaun of the Dead" cake.

Trials & Troubles

I'm going to let this photo speak for itself as much as I can. Obviously, I am miserable. Oh, explain you say? Gotcha.

I woke up yesterday feeling 1000% better than I had the previous two days. I'd gotten a full night's sleep and my pain seemed to be gone. I went downtown to see my roommate, pay bills (gonna #1), and then headed to Strawberry Hill for a quick walk (gonna #2).

I slipped on my tennis shoes and got through the walk pretty swiftly, taking my usual break at the overlook to rest and enjoy the scenery. I took off down the last stretch, which is a decline. I wasn't exerting too much energy past the forces gravity had upon me when I was slapped backward in the chest.

Not by a branch or even a hobo living in the woods. No, by my own heart, reminding me that I have some kind of arrhythmia that eludes medical science. It didn't want me to move on, even though it had been two years. Selfish of it, eh?

I called my dad who talked me down, then my mom who let me cry. I don't know who said exercising on an empty stomach was a good idea, but I want my money back. And my day. And my night, the one I'm losing as I sit here, chest sore, scared to close my eyes.

Even after an assuring phone call from Marigold (because stepmother just sounds so wrong), I feel uneasy inside. I feel exhausted. But most of all, I feel upset that my day of gonnas was derailed.

I know that it was best of me not to force myself to do anything else, but part of me can't help but feel guilty. I feel like I'm breaking a promise to everyone who reads this. And more importantly, I feel like I'm breaking a promise to myself.

I know I have to get better, but I don't want to give up on the chance of normalcy. And I absolutely, positively, damn-sure don't want to give up on this project. It has to be seen through, even if I have to take baby steps. I just hope that I'm a little less Bob about it.

Today, I'm gonna: pack up and drive home, do a few resumés, and hang out with family and friends who can respect that I need a slow speed for a little while.

(P.S. I was serious about those letters/emails/texts of encouragement. While remarks upon my radiance alone are fine, you may also comment on my never-ending wit and my impressive pop-culture knowledge. If I like it enough, I might buy you a pizza.*)
